Mount St. Mary’s University is a private, liberal arts, Catholic university in the Catoctin Mountains, near Emmitsburg, which is a community in the US state of Maryland, situated just south of the Mason-Dixon line, separating Maryland from Pennsylvania, with a population of nearly 2300 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.
Mount St. Mary’s University was founded in 1808, by French émigré Father John DuBois, and it is the oldest independent Catholic college in the States, and the 2nd oldest Catholic college in USA, after Georgetown. Mount St. Mary’s became co-educational in 1972, and it is known today as the ‘’ Cradle of Bishops’’, due to the high number of alumni, who have become bishops.
In addition to the undergraduate school, the university also offers its students 5 graduate programs and a seminary. Mount St. Mary’s has an enrollment of 2 125 students, of which more than 1600 are undergraduate students, and over 500 are graduate students. Among the undergraduate students, 55% are from Maryland, 33% coming from other Mid-Atlantic States, representing a total of 30 states and 12 foreign countries.
The athletic teams from Mount St. Mary’s University are known as the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers, who compete in the NCAA, in various sports, being perhaps, best known for their achievements in men’s basketball, in which they’ve experienced most of their notable wins. Their last appearance in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament was in 2008, which was their 3rd appearance, and they are currently coached by Robert Burke.
